AI governance glossary

Bring your own key (BYOK)

Bring your own key is a model access arrangement where an organization provides its own provider credential for use through a supported gateway.

Why it matters

Some organizations want model access associated with their own provider account. They also need a clear way to protect and govern the credential used by an agent.

How it works

The organization supplies a provider credential, and a gateway uses it for approved model traffic. Provider billing and credential lifecycle depend on the selected provider and account.

How Halo approaches it

Halo supports BYOK for OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Cerebras, and GMI Cloud, with credentials brokered through Halo gateways. The gateway is built to add providers quickly, so you can bring 100+ other providers through guided setup.
