AI governance glossary

EU AI Act

The EU AI Act is a European Union regulation that sets obligations for providers and deployers of AI systems, with requirements phasing in over time.

Why it matters

The Act creates requirements for organizations that develop or use AI systems. The obligations depend on the system, its role, and the applicable timeline.

How it works

The Act entered into force on 1 August 2024. Obligations phase in from 2 February 2025 for prohibited practices and AI literacy, 2 August 2025 for general-purpose AI model obligations, 2 August 2026 for most remaining obligations including many high-risk requirements, and 2 August 2027 for high-risk AI embedded in regulated products. Proposed amendments mean readers should confirm the current official timeline. This overview is general information and not legal advice.

How Halo approaches it

Halo records reviewable evidence that can support governance programs aligned to the EU AI Act. Halo does not automate legal compliance or determine whether an organization meets its obligations.
